Mitchell Library - new archive opening times

Following on from a post on this blog on the 17th, it is now confirmed that the Mitchell Library's Archives and Special Collections department has new opening hours, at least until December 31st. Due to staff shortages, the archive will unfortunately no longer be open late on Thursdays or on Saturdays (although in certain circumstances, and by prior arrangement only, access to the archives may be agreed on a Saturday).

Monday 9.00am - 5:00pm
Tuesday 9.00am - 8:00pm
Wednesday 9.00am - 5:00pm
Thursday 9.00am - 5:00pm
Friday 9.00am - 5:00pm
Saturday Closed
Sunday Closed

The archive's contact details are as follows:

Archives and Special Collections, The Mitchell, North Street, Glasgow, G3 7DN
Tel: 0141 287 2908 or 2910
Fax: 0141 226 8452
E-mail: archives@csglasgow.org
Web: www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/Residents/Library_Services/The_Mitchell/Archives/archiveslocationandhoursofopening.htm

NB: The archive is located on Level 2, and is not the same area as the family history centre on Level 3 - see www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/Residents/Library_Services/Family_Local_History/Family_History

UPDATE 30 OCT 09: Thanks to Alex (Jock Tamson) from the ScotFamTree forum for sharing his response from the Mitchell concerning the new arrangement, which is confirmed as temporary, and which will be resolved when a new post is filled in January - for the full response see the follow on comments from this post.

I think this is terrible news for those(like myself) who work Monday-Friday.

Definitely not the greatest news to have emerged from the Mitchell in a long while!

Chris,I had a wee argument with Dr O'Brien approx 2 yrs ago about this subject and it was clear to me that they wanted (on a Saturday)'' A quiet day ''!

They really didn't like us turning-up at the week-end and making the staff 'work' for their pay-cheque !

Och ! I'm gettin' aff ma soap-box !

Definitely not fair to those who work Mon-Fri. Why not take a leaf out of book of the National Archives at Kew - close on Mondays and open on Saturdays?

Och well!

Chris,Here is my email response from the GDC.

Dear Mr. Airlie,
I reply to your recent email concerning the temporary changes to the opening hours of Archives. These opening hours will be in place for the next 8 weeks until the end of December and are due to a delay in the filling of a staff vacancy which will be resolved in the New Year.

I apologise for any inconvenience this causes.
If there is a piece of research that are you working on then please contact Archives who will discuss with you how this may be progressed.

Yours sincerely,

Marion Beaton
